FW18 (1996), JAPANESE GP
The FW18 Williams-Renault is one of the most successful Formula 1 cars of all time.
The car was extremely reliable and competitive on all types of circuits; it dominated the 1996 season, winning 12 of the 16 races.
As the final race of the season approached, the Japanese GP, all eyes were on the intra-team title fight between Williams’s Hill and rookie Villeneuve.
Villeneuve qualified on pole and needed to win the race to take the title, Hill needed just one point to win.
After overtaking pole-sitter Villeneuve almost immediately, Hill commanded the race to secure his F1 driver’s championship, crossing the line to the most iconic piece of commentary as he celebrated the win “I’ve got to stop because I’ve got a lump in my throat”.
