Carlos Sainz: The Next Williams Racer

Born in Madrid on 1st September 1994, Carlos Sainz was always destined for a career in racing, after all, it’s in his blood. Growing up in the footsteps of his father, rally legend Carlos Sainz Snr., it was all he knew growing up.

He was given his first powered car at the age of two, and by the time he reached 11 years old, his own journey to the pinnacle of motorsport had started.

His promise was evident early on as he began rising through the various domestic ranks of the Spanish karting scene, before branching out further into the continent and then across the world, winning the Asia-Pacific KF3 title in 2008.

In 2010, he stepped into open-wheel racing, turning heads in the Formula BMW Europe series by clinching the Rookie Cup. He would also compete in three rounds of its Pacific leg, with the highlight being a victory on the iconic streets of Macau.

Continuing to climb the motorsport ladder, he secured the title in the 2011 Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Championship and the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 Series.

In truth, 2014 was nothing short of sensational for the Spaniard, with seven wins from seventeen races in what proved to be his one and only season in the series. Why just one? Well... Formula 1 came calling.

At just 20, Carlos made his F1 debut, partnering fellow rookie Max Verstappen at Scuderia Toro Rosso for the 2015 campaign. Not for one moment did he look out of place, scoring points on his maiden outing with a P9 finish in Melbourne.

Further strong performances followed, with an emotional P5 in Qualifying at the Spanish GP and a P7 finish at the Singapore GP.

His development continued throughout 2016, with 10 points-paying finishes placing him P12 in the standings come the end of the season.

2017 was another strong campaign, with a P4 finish in Singapore being the high point during his time with the Faenza outfit. He switched to Renault with four rounds to go of the season, where he continued to impress with his consistent points finishes and strong racecraft, solidifying his reputation as a dependable and fast driver.

Sainz headed to McLaren in 2019, and it is here where he accomplished the next milestone of his career - his first podium, which came at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix. After being unable to set a time in Qualifying due to a power issue, Carlos charged from P20 on the grid to P4 at the flag before a post-race penalty elevated him to P3.

Another podium would follow in 2020 with a P2 finish during a dramatic Italian Grand Prix at Monza, a circuit that would soon take on new importance for the Spaniard when Ferrari came calling for the 2021 season.

In those red overalls, more podiums would come his way. In 2022, Carlos secured his first Grand Prix victory by converting his pole position to P1 on Sunday on a typically British summer afternoon at Silverstone.

His second win came in 2023, becoming the only non-Red Bull driver to stand on the top step that season with a Smooth Operation in Singapore. Another P1 came earlier this season, leading home a 1-2 finish for the Scuderia in Melbourne.

For 2025 and beyond, Carlos will join an exciting project at Williams Racing as we look to return towards the front of the field.

“The ultimate goal of bringing Williams back to where it belongs, at the front of the grid, is a challenge that I embrace with excitement and positivity.

“I am convinced that this team has all the right ingredients to make history again and starting on January 1 I will give my absolute best to drive Williams forward alongside every single member of the team.”

Nacido en Madrid el 1 de septiembre de 1994, Carlos Sainz siempre estuvo destinado a una carrera en las carreras, después de todo, está en su sangre. Creciendo a la sombra de su padre, la leyenda del rally Carlos Sainz Snr., era todo lo que conocía mientras crecía.

Le dieron su primer coche de motor a los dos años, y para cuando llegó a los 11 años, su propio camino hacia la cima del automovilismo ya había comenzado.

Su talento fue evidente desde el principio, ya que empezó a ascender a través de las diversas categorías nacionales del karting español, antes de expandirse por el continente y luego por el mundo, ganando el título KF3 Asia-Pacífico en 2008.

En 2010, dio el salto a las carreras de monoplazas, llamando la atención en la serie Formula BMW Europe al ganar la Copa de Novatos. También compitió en tres rondas de su etapa en el Pacífico, siendo el punto culminante la victoria en las icónicas calles de Macao.

Continuando su ascenso en el automovilismo, aseguró el título en el Campeonato de Europa del Norte de Formula Renault 2.0 en 2011 y en la Serie Formula Renault 3.5 en 2014.

En realidad, 2014 fue nada menos que sensacional para el español, con siete victorias en diecisiete carreras en lo que resultó ser su única temporada en la serie. ¿Por qué solo una? Bueno... Fórmula 1 llamó a su puerta. Con solo 20 años, Carlos hizo su debut en la F1, siendo compañero del novato Max Verstappen en la Scuderia Toro Rosso durante la campaña de 2015. En ningún momento pareció fuera de lugar, sumando puntos en su primera salida con un 9° puesto en Melbourne.

Le siguieron más actuaciones destacadas, con un emotivo 5° lugar en la clasificación del GP de España y un 7° puesto en el GP de Singapur.

Su desarrollo continuó durante 2016, con 10 finales puntuables que lo colocaron en el 12° lugar en la clasificación al final de la temporada.

2017 fue otra campaña fuerte, logrando su punto álgido con el equipo de Faenza al reclamar el 4° puesto en Singapur. Cambió a Renault con cuatro rondas para el final de la temporada, donde continuó impresionando con sus consistentes clasificaciones en puntos y su sólida habilidad en carrera, consolidando su reputación como un piloto fiable y rápido.

Sainz se unió a McLaren en 2019, y fue allí donde logró el siguiente hito en su carrera: su primer podio, que llegó en el Gran Premio de Brasil de 2019. Después de no poder marcar un tiempo en la clasificación debido a un problema de potencia, Carlos avanzó del 20° puesto en la parrilla al 4° al llegar a la meta, antes de que una penalización post-carrera lo elevase al 3°.

Otro podio llegaría en 2020 con un 2° lugar durante un dramático Gran Premio de Italia en Monza, un circuito que pronto tomaría nueva importancia para el español cuando Ferrari lo fichara para la temporada 2021.

En ese uniforme rojo, llegarían más podios. En 2022, Carlos aseguró su primera victoria en un Gran Premio al convertir su pole position en el 1° lugar el domingo en una típica tarde de verano británica en Silverstone.

Su segunda victoria llegó en 2023, convirtiéndose en el único piloto que no era de Red Bull en subir al escalón más alto ese año con una actuación impecable en Singapur. Otro 1° lugar llegó a principios de esta temporada, liderando un 1-2 para la Scuderia en Melbourne.

A partir de 2025, Carlos se unirá a un emocionante proyecto en Williams Racing mientras buscamos regresar a la parte delantera de la parrilla.
