It was a moment Logan Sargeant must have dreamt about for some time - his first-ever Qualifying in Formula 1 - and our young American certainly did himself proud, missing out on Q2 in excruciating fashion.
In the final stages of Saturday’s qualifying session in Bahrain, Logan nailed an impressive 1:31.652, which was, incredibly, an identical time to McLaren’s Lando Norris. Sarge’s progression to Q2 was only denied because the Brit clocked his time first.
The 22-year-old, who placed P16, also out-qualified all other fellow F1 rookies and was just two-tenths off teammate Alex Albon who managed a speedy 1:31.461 effort in Q1.
This is further proof, as if we needed it, of how incredibly fine the margins are at the pinnacle of motorsport.
LS2 was in positive spirits after his maiden qualifying in the sport, while also recognising that he could have done even better:
“It's a dream come true to go out and qualify in Formula 1.
“We had good pace today and the team deserved to have both cars in Q2.
“A slight mistake in Sector 1 cost me as I struggled to find my brake point with the change of wind at Turn 1.
“However, we've laid a good foundation for ourselves to build off going forward. I think we had the car in a great window this evening.
“In terms of balance, it was right where I wanted it, I just needed to put it together slightly better.”
All to play for tomorrow, team.
