As part of
Fan Appreciation 2024, we’ve reached out to some of our most engaged fans to find out why they follow Williams Racing.
Fans have been invited to share with us their Driver Card designs on social media. We’ve reached out to some of those that have and they have been so generous with their time, sharing their stories with us.
We feel it’s right that the wider motorsport world should get to hear them as well, so welcome to the “My Driver Card Story” series.
First up to tell their story is Fraser Lloyd from the United Kingdom:
I started watching Formula 1 with my family at the start of 2012 when I was 6 or 7 years old. One of my earliest memories is the Spanish Grand Prix of that season, famous for Pastor Maldonado’s win with the team. Although I had yet to have the kind of interest in the sport that I now have, I could tell that this was a special result.
It was in 2014 that the team really caught my eye with their lineup of Bottas and Massa, a brilliant livery and re-emergence at the sharp end. I remember spending many races that year monitoring the gaps to see if Valtteri or Felipe were in the fight for a top 3 finish!
Around this time, I started delving into F1 history which led me to learn about the team’s past cars, drivers and successes. The team’s history is like no other, and this is one of the things that I love. Many flashpoints and iconic scenes throughout the sport’s history are thanks to them, as are many innovations and quite possibly the greatest car of them all: the FW14B.
Another thing I love about the team is their continued fighting spirit. No matter how difficult things have been in recent years, they still come out each race with the ambition and drive to climb back to the top. As a fan, it’s great to enjoy the team’s good results in these times and have hope that things will get even better!
Looking to the future, I’m excited to see how Alex and Carlos will perform in 2025 as the team continues their efforts to win again. Having two drivers of such a high level is just one of the reasons to believe in the team. I’m yet to witness the team win a championship like those that I’ve read about, but I’m looking forward to when they do.
In my time watching Formula 1, highlights have included the team’s resurgence in 2014 which saw them fighting for regular podiums and taking a fantastic front row lockout in Austria that year. From the 2024 lineup, Valtteri Bottas remains my favourite driver to this day!
Some of my other favourite moments since then include Robert Kubica’s point-scoring finish in the 2019 German GP, a bright spot in the most difficult of seasons, the unlikely front row for George Russell at Spa in 2021 which translated into a podium, and more recently, the team’s third-row lockout in Las Vegas last year.
My Driver Card carries my initials (FL) and the number 25 as this is my birth date (I also think it’s a nice looking number!).
Blue is my favourite colour, so I knew I wanted to incorporate this within my design as it is also the main colour of the team.
The choice of United Kingdom helmet is to reflect the team’s strong performance there this year and Silverstone is my home race.
I enjoy playing Pit Wall Predictions as it adds another layer of interest to the races! It ensures that I pay closer attention to the team’s strategy throughout an event.
Collecting the badges is also something I like due to the feeling of exclusivity if I manage to collect them while they are still available – I’ve currently managed every Grand Prix badge in 2024!
Lastly, I find the app’s live feed with updates and lap times useful on race weekends, especially if I’m on the go and can’t watch live. The radio transcripts are a great touch!
