Plenty of records have fallen during the 2024 Formula 1 season, but as we arrive at the final round, there is one that nobody can currently touch, and it is unlikely to ever be broken.
To explain, we must cast our minds back to the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of 2014. It’s the 19th and final race of the season, bringing to a close the first year of turbo-hybrid engines.
But this finale would boast one distinct difference that had never been seen before and is yet to be seen again.
In late 2013, it was decided that the last round of the 2014 campaign would have double points on offer in an attempt to “maximise focus on the championship until the end of the campaign.”
The introduction was not hugely popular amongst fans, but it went ahead as planned in Abu Dhabi.
Felipe and Valtteri celebrate a 2-3 finish in Abu Dhabi.
Lewis Hamilton would go on to win the race, earning himself his second Drivers’ Championship with a whopping 50 points added to his tally.
However, joining him on the podium would be the Williams Racing drivers of Felipe Massa in P2 and Valtteri Bottas in P3.
Between them, they picked up 66 points – the most ever scored by an F1 team in a single race.
This comfortably cemented our place in P3 in the 2014 Constructors’ Championship, a ten-year high for the team.
It also earned us a record that is unlikely to ever be broken, as the double points idea was dropped for the following season and never returned.
